Winter Pruning Time
Winter is an ideal time to prune most ornamental and shade trees: Airborne diseases and insects are not present, frozen ground allows for quicker access, the lack of foliage allows greater visibility within the trees and easier disposal of brush. These factors combine to improve efficiency and value. Now is a good time to have us asses your trees for potential winter storm liabilities and address any concerns. Structural pruning, installation of support cables, and removing hazard trees are all practices we employ to reduce the risk of tree failure and preserve your valued arbor.
Many people naturally think that we must go dormant along with the trees and enter into hibernation until April, however a great deal of your trees' needs can and should be managed now, not when we will be fully occupied with all the super time sensitive demands of Spring. Planning for dormant season pruning and removals allows us to smooth out the work load and improve service throughout the year. Call or email us now to arrange a visit.

Winter Moth Alert!
Based on the numbers of adult moths we saw flying last fall, Winter Moth is a pest that shows no signs of slowing down. Their populations were up again from Fall 2008 and have spread into previously untouched areas. We are expecting a great deal of defoliation this spring on untreated deciduous trees: favorites include Linden, Oak, Apple all Maples, Crabapple, Cherry, Birch, Juneberry, Mulberry, and Blueberry. In the Spring of 2009 we saw caterpillars eating trees they normally don't like because the populations had become so dense.
Please encourage your neighbors to give us a call so we can treat them too! Your 2010 Plant Health Care Proposal will include at least one Winter Moth Spray this Spring.

2010 Plant Health Care Proposals
Will be coming out within the next couple of weeks. As your arborists, we are encouraging a stronger preventative strategy for your properties. New additions to the proposals for Spring and Summer are:
1) Organic fertilizer for trees, ornamentals, shrubs, planting beds, and lawns. Our unique blend of humates, fish and kelp amend the soil and provide needed nutrition to the roots, stems, and foliar structures of your entire greenscape, keeping them healthy and more resistant to diseases and pests.
2) Compost tea: Brewed right here in our lab, compost tea is the cheapest and most effective way to fight disease in plants over the long term. Our beneficial microbes crete a barrier in the soils and on the plants' surfaces that protect them from the harmful fungi and pathogens that cause diseases and blights.
3 Horticultural oil: Sprayed in the spring to suffocate unwanted insect eggs laid last summer & fall.
When you get your proposal, look it over and send jonathan an email accepting it. If you have any questions, or want to add or delete anything, please let us know as soon as you can! Our goal is to provide you the best plant health care at competitive rates.
Our oldest customers who have religiously fertilized and taken preventative measures spend much less on "curative" applications like fungicides and pesticides. We would much rather be applying goodness to your properties!
