Soil Management Overview

Soil Analysis:

Soil condition and health is vital to the success of your turfscape. A total lawn care strategy includes a broader analysis that takes into consideration sun and shade areas as well as soil types; sandy, loam, and highly acidic.

Once the spectrum is identified, we will propose a plan that will meet your objectives for each area and condition, and then begin your vitalization process.

Fertilization:

All lawns require nitrogen and other supplemental minerals. We will visit your property 4-6 times per year to apply Fertilizers, Humate & Kelp Soil conditioners, live liquid biological amendments, and pH adjusting Calcitic Lime to optimize your turf grass. Special services include Aerating for overly compacted soils, and compost top-dressing for barren soils lacking in organic matter.

Soil Reconstitution:

Once we determine your soil constitutions, we can quickly begin the process of bringing the soil back to life to support a range of turf options. Using our popular Compost-Tea, homemade at Bransfield, we can turn barren soils into vital Greenscapes.

Soil and Fertilization:

Woody plants, Trees, and Shrubs are systems of life and energy inspiring to watch grow and multiply. Water, Sunlight, Air, and Minerals combined elegantly to form the plants and flowers that we love.

The Sunlight, Air, and Water generally take care of themselves, but the Minerals, that's where we as stewards of these plants can step in and make significant contributions to life and health.

Think of your car, a complex system of machinery, thousands of pounds of metal and rubber ready to go to work taking you where you need to go, but without the Key, the key that is a fraction of an ounce, your car sits idle and can do nothing. The Key in the tree or shrub system is the mineral content of the soil--nitrogen, copper, potassium are just a few of dozens necessary for vigorous life function.

Why do we need to add minerals to soil?

For billions of years, mineralization in soil has been the result of tiny microorganisms digesting and breaking down organic matter that gets added to soils by leaf and plant debris. In the contemporary landscape, all leaves and debris are vacuumed up every fall, arresting the nutrient cycling process that has served terrestrial plants since their first days.

How do we Supplement soil minerals?

There are a variety of methods to add minerals to soil or to release minerals that are already there but unavailable to the plants. One method is to inject liquid formulations directly into the soil and into the root zone--it is critical not to inject these these liquids too far down as the majority of tree and shrub roots are in the top 18 inches of soil. Another method is apply dry, granular materials onto the soil surface--this is recommended for larger planting beds that have many smaller plants.

What Materials are used?

We have identified a number of soil conditioners and mineral products that provide great results and pose no risk to groundwater or soil microbiology. Humate's, Acadian Kelp powder, Fish Protein Hydrolysate, and Calcium derived from Oyster shells are some of the parent materials for our fertilization program. We also introduce Live, Microbiological amendments that we produce here at our shop.
