Nature is often throwing us curve balls like floods, droughts, unforeseen spikes in pest populations, etc, and it is usually best to respond to these stresses sooner than later. We've learned that the end of August is an ideal midpoint in the growing season to take stock of your plants and amend or add to the Plant Health plan for the remainder of the year. We will paper-mail and email a Fall addendum with any updates for the rest of the year. There is no need to mail this one back to us, just call or email if you want to change or discuss.
You can expect to see us out on your properties as early in March as weather permits. We will be starting with spring fertilizer and horticultural oil until the winter moth caterpillars hatch.
Dormant Pruning and Winter Tree Work
Despite all the snow we have on the ground, February-March is still an ideal time for Dormant season pruning. Crab Trees, Fruit trees, andaggressive reductions of Yews and many other ornamentals is best done in these next 6-8 weeks. In fact all this snow loading on the branches is highlighting which plants are getting long and leggy and are at risk for an unfortunate break. With the help of our new super-powered snow-blower, we are still getting out and getting this work done, so please get in touch to find out what we can do for you in the dormant season.

Why Good Soils almost Never Freeze.
The aggregate effect of all the biotic activities of microbes digesting Humic and Organic materials in healthy, living soils is enough heat to keep things thawed and active all winter long regardless of how cold the air temperature gets. Another bi-product of microbes living, eating, and dying is the production of compounds and nutrients in forms that trees and shrubs are designed to utilize. In our Organic Soil programs, we feed the soil microbes with our Organic materials, and in turn, the soil becomes a fertilizer factory which feeds the trees and plants in an ideal fashion while buffering the roots from the ill effects of extreme heat and cold. Interestingly, I recently noticed how micro-biotic activity often has enough energy to melt the bottom of the blanket of snow keeping the soil moisture constatnt all winter long. All our trees, even those with irrigation, suffered a great deal in this last summer's drought; the water released when this snow pack melts into the soil will be of great benefit.
All that Cold above but still Warm inside. |
While the temps outside were in the negative degrees, within this sample of finishing compost the temperature was a cozy 45 degrees, a very comfortable environment for tree roots to be actively exchanging starches for nutrients through their Mycchorizal Fungal associates. This sample was taken right at the surface of the pile; there wasn't a frozen crust at all!

Here is an extreme example of the impressive power of the heat and water vapor produced by biotic activity, seen here cutting through the snow on a cold -11 degrees the morning of Jan. 24th. The heat produced by micro-organismswhich are decomposing this pile of wood chips can reach an amazing 140 degrees.
This sample of forest floor was 38 degrees at 2 inches below the surface. this small worm was alive and wiggling at a depth of 4 inches.

Friendship in Trees.
President's Greeting
2010 was a year of weather extremes and unusual pest challenges. Flood, drought, and damaging micro-bursts of wind and rain all affected our trees and plants. Fortunately, Bransfield Tree Co was on a great footing with a truly robust staff to respond to the emergencies. Also, the benefits of the Organic Fertilizers really shined through in 2010, bringing our specimen plants through the stress times in very good shape. After the last 3-5 years of Winter Moth feeding and wide swings in precipitation, it's not hard to spot the raggedy trees that have been left to fend for themselves. While we can't know exactly what 2011 will bring, I am ever confident in our abilities to protect and preserve the living treasures on your property.
Valentines Day is almost here! And even though it may feel like the coming of the next ice age right now, it is still a time to consider Love and Gratitude in our lives. So I give a heartfelt thank you for all of my terrific clients and for the friendship in trees that we have together. Collectively, we all enjoy an amazing canopy of ancient and otherwise impressive plants. Caring for all of your trees is, for me, the best job in the world, and I am certainly grateful for the opportunity to be your Arborist and trusted advisor in all matters Green..
Warmest Regards,
