Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) was first blown into Massachusetts by hurricane Gloria back in 1985. A very tiny Aphid like insect, its most characteristic feature is the white, waxy fluff or "wool" with which it covers itself. While each individual is tiny, their extreme powers of reproduction and lack of native predators create extraordinary infestations that can overwhelm even the healthiest trees in a matter of a few years. .

HWA feeds on both Canadian and Carolina Hemlocks--two highly valuable tree species in our natural woodlands and private landscapes alike. Early detection and treatment are the best defense against the damage and degradation caused by this invasive bug. Bransfield Tree Co. offers two distinct control strategies depending on specifics like the level of infestation, location, and weather exposure. A consultation with one of our experience arborists will help determine the best control measure.

Management:

Many local municipalities and home owners in the Eastern Massachusetts area have been using Bransfield Tree Company .for years to manage HWA in town forests, commons, and private residences. Our base of experience dealing with this insect pest dates back to its first known infestations in the state 15 years ago. We have learned that the best approach to HWA is to improve the health and vigor of the trees with Organic soil amendments and fertility materials like Sea Kelp and Humic Acid while attacking the insect pest with a choice of systemic control agents or oil based smothering sprays
